Rage Update and A Secret
Almost finished reading RAGE (for only the second time). Look for my essay sometime this weekend or early next week.
A couple weeks ago, I admitted to a reader via Twitter that there are TWO Stephen King books I have never read…and ever since, folks have been busy trying to guess those two titles. No one has gotten the correct answers as of yet. If you all would like to make your own guesses in the COMMENTS section below, please feel free.
I will even hand out some prizes if anyone correctly guesses both titles (but not until I post my essay for the first of the two books; I want it to remain a surprise until that time).
Thanks and please follow me on Twitter if you’re inclined: @RichardChizmar

Guessing the two books are
The Long Walk
Pet Sematary
Eyes of the Dragon & Dreamcatcher
Hmmmm…..I’m going to guess Insomnia and Lisey’s Story.
Gerald’s Game and Rose Madder?
Needful Things & From a Buick 8
My guess on the two books never read: Danse Macabre and On Writing
Taking into account that Mr. Chizmar has had a busy year writing, I’m guessing the two books he hasn’t read are Mr. Mercedes and Revival.
I’m going to guess “Storm of the Century” and “The Colorado Kid”
I’m going to guess Roadwork and Insomnia for no other reason than those were the last two I read catching up on his work.
The Plant ( if you have any pull, could you ask him to finish it, I really enjoyed it). Thanks.
My guesses for two you haven’t read are because I haven’t read (only) these:
Joyland
Rocky Wood
Rocky Wood?? I haven’t even heard of that one.
Rocky Wood is not a book by Stephen King, he is a friend of Mr King who recently passed away, he has written several books about King, King also did the ASL ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE in Rocky’s name.
Rocky Wood was a historian of all things Stephen King, and compiler of rare Stephen King material, who recently passed away.
So Richard, I guess that you haven’t read The Plant and Dreamcatcher.
Gabriel Pralle
Roadworks & The Running Man
I’m going with
Cycle of the Werewolf
and
Eyes of the Dragon
I’m going to guess two from the same era, Gerald’s Game & Rose Madder
Here are my guesses:
The Stand: The Complete and Uncut Edition
Storm of the Century
The Plant and Revival
Lisey’s Story & Cujo
I’ll go with “The Plant” and “The Regulators”…no reason….
My guesses for two you haven’t read are ‘The Eyes of the Dragon’ and ‘Joyland’.
.. Mike Strider
Danse Macabre and Four past Midnight(at least not all of it as some seems to be rehash to me)
I would guess Rose Madder and The Cycle of the Werewolf
I guess Danse Macabre and Cycle of the Werewolf.
Hmm…My guess would be:
1) Storm of the Century (because it is more of a screenplay & came out during a busy publishing year for SK)
2) Eyes of the Dragon (because it was geared towards a younger audience than any other SK book & again came out during a rather busy year for SK)
Gerald’s Game and Dolores Clairborne….I wanted to say the Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon but I think you probably read that one and loved it.
Faithful, The Eyes of the Dragon
Haha. I can assure you he has read FAITHFUL, being a Red Sox fan and all.
From a Buick 8 and delores Claiborne.
Christine and The Tommyknockers
Danse Macabre and On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft
Hm…. Faithful, maybe, and….Blockade Billy?
I think you haven’t read The Plant and Eyes of the Dragon
Rose Madder & Lisey’s Story
Same ones I haven’t read.
IF YOU HAVEN’T READ LISEY’S STORY, YOU OWE IT TO YOURSELF TO DO SO. IT IS STEPHEN KING’S FAVORITE BOOK. IT IS EXCELLENT. I HAVE READ IT TWO TIMES MYFELF.
Gerald’s Game and Hearts in Atlantis
Faithful and Eyes of the Dragon
The Dark Half and Revival
Faithful
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
A baseball double header!
I’m going to guess “The Regulators” “Eyes of the Dragon”
my best guess for the two books Mr Chizmar has not read by Stephen King are: MY PRETTY PONY and NIGHTMARES IN THE SKY because he is a constant reader like myself, and those two never quite fit. dying to find out what they are by the way, but thats my best guess!
Duma key and bag of bones?
Rose Madder & Revival
Just a note about REVIVAL. Many others have suggested that one, you know, because of its recency. But do you also know that CEMETERY DANCE provided a slip-cased edition? I am fairly certain that Mr. Chizmar had been provided a reading copy before-hand.
I will guess Dolores Claiborne and Lisey ‘s Story.
Richard, my two guesses for the books you never read would be Dolores Claiborne and Blaze.
I think they are Desperation and The Requlators
The only King book I haven’t read is THE EYE OF THE DRAGON, which King wrote for his daughter. I’m betting this is one of the two books. My guess for the other one is Rose Madder.
Gerald’s Game & Rose Madder
The Stand & Firestarter
Lisey’s Story and The Colorado Kid?
Rose Madder & Hearts in Atlantis
Seems just about as if one person’s guess is just as good as another, and so I’ll pitch in.
INSOMNIA (after all, is there anyone who has been able to tackle it and not drifted off into slumberland? – sorry, Mr. King)
And the other? Well, heck…
DREAMCATCHER. (I had to force myself; really I did. I kept up a running commentary: “You’re fucking kidding me, right?”)
Was it the “shit weasles” that got you? HA HA!!!
Knowing what an avid SK fan Richard seems to be I think the two books he hasn’t yet read are the two to be released in 2015! That would be “Finders Keepers” and “The Bazaar of Bad Dreams”!! Hope I’m correct!
I am guessing Faithful and Danse Macabre…
I am going to say “the fifth quarter” written under his pseudonym John Swithen and published in 1972. And “Needful Things”.
I’m going with The Long Walk and Rose Madder.
I ‘m going to go with The Talisman and Black House. I’ve started Talisman three times and I just can’t get into it. It strikes me as The Dark Tower’s inferior younger brother.
I am guessing blood and smoke but believe it was only available as an audio book and the other is quitters about smoking
One of the books you haven’t read is Blaze.
My first guess would be Nightmares in the sky, but since it is not included on the booklist (and I am assuming we are only talking about books on the list) my guess is Creepshow & Danse Macabre
My guess: It and Liseys Story
My guesses are Colorado Kid and Joyland because they are a different style.
My guess… The Stand and rose Madder
My Pretty Pony and Secret Windows
Firestarter and Needful Things.
I say The Dead Zone and On Writing
Cycle of the Werewolf and The Eyes of the Dragon
I think they were perhaps earlier works… Dead Zone and Skeleton Crew
THE TOMMYKNOCKERS and ROSE MADDER
I second Eyes of the Dragon and Cycle of the Werewolf – for no particular reason 🙂
How about “On writing” and “Danse Macabre”
Cell and Cycle of the Wherewolf.
Danse Macabre & Faithful.
My guess would be that you are close to my age, 54, and probably went to college,..solo Maximize Overdrive and Secret Window??? Ann Smith
Richard…my phone is in agony and is constantly changing the spelling of certain words. If you post…it’s three dots and sooo. And Maximum. Ann
The Dark Half and Revival
How about Desperation and The Tommyknockers. The Talisman is hard to get into but after the first section does get better as their styles mesh.
Eyes of the Dragon and Storm of the Century which was the original script in book form
My guesses are Dolores Claiborne and Dreamcatcher
my Little Pony and Eye of the Dragon
My guesses are Joyland and The Plant
How about Duma Key and The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon?
The Eyes of the Dragon and The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon?
My guess would be: Storm of the Century, and Lisey’s Story.
Roadwork and Cycle of the Werewolf
I’m guessing My Pretty Pony and The Regulators.
Wind through the keyhole and Eyes of the dragon
Insomnia and Rose Madder…
Danse Macabre and Dolores Claiborne maybe
Cujo and The Dark Half
My guess would be The Tommyknockers and Insomnia.
I would say , storm of the century and My pretty pony
I am guessing Faithful (I never read that one, I don’t like baseball) and The Colorado Kid.
Other possibilities are “Joyland” and “The Colorado Kid” (these books are different than other King books, they are more crime/mystery oriented)
could those two books be….Danse Macabre and On Writing?
No one has correctly guessed the two titles yet!
Remember…only published books count.
Regulators and Desperation
Colorado Kid and Duma Key
My guess is The Secretary of Dreams Volume 1 and Volume 2
Hi from Washington State. How about Pet Sematary, and Needful Things.
Blaze and Revival
I’m guessing desperation and regulators
The Stand and Lisey’s Story
Cell & Full Dark, No Stars
Revival and the cut version of The Stand
The Green Mile and Everything’s Eventual
Revival and Danse Macabre
I’m picking Just After Sunset and Everythings Eventual
Tommyknockers, Desperation
Black House and Thinner
Cycle of the Werewolf and On Writing
Ghost Brothers of Darkland County and On Writing
Firestarter and Thinner
Ok, The Tommyknockers and Salem’s Lot
I’m going to list the two I’ve not read. Danse Macabre and Bag of Bones.
My Pretty Pony and Dolan’s Cadillac (you watched Slater instead)
The Regulators and Tommyknockers
Insomnia and secret windows.
Eyes of the Dragon & On Writing
I’ll Guess Duma Key and Lisey’s Story
I’m thinking revival and dr. sleep.
I guess: “The Stand” (original) and “Storm of the Century”
My thought goes to:
1) “Faithful”
2) “Storm of the Century”
Cycle of the Werewolf and Bare Bones
The Cell and Castle Rock newsletter / paper
Took me a little while but I have a complete set
Danse macabre and the tommyknockers
Tommyknockers and Lisey’s Story
Since Richard’s a writer, I’m guessing he’s read all the ones about writing (Danse Macabre, On Writing, Secret Windows), and being a guy, he’s probably read Faithful. So, I think the two he hasn’t read are Running Man and Creepshow because both were movies when he was a young man.
Anything like me and it’s Full Dark, No Stars and Just After Sunset…
I’m going to guess The Plant and The Tommyknockers.
Desperation & the Regulators.
Already guessed this on Twitter yesterday, but just realized you wanted em on here so they’d all be in one place! My first guess was incorrect but my second guess was Eyes of the Dragon and The Dark Half.
Dolan’s Cadillac and My Pretty Pony
The Dead Zone and 11/22/63
creepshow and Storm of the Century
Ah, Another guess “Nightmares In The Sky” And “Danse Macabre”. It’s worth another shot with these prizes and my Constant Reader’s curiosity; of course.
I guess I will make another guess. DOLORES CLAIBORNE and GERALD’S GAME.
ok another guess, then? this is a lot of fun you know! CYCLE OF THE WEREWOLF and BLAZE ?
Guess I’ll guess again. How about Ur and Faithful. Are the books you have not read considered novels or is everything included.
OK, since there is no successful guess I’ll try Roadwork, and Cujo.
I’ll try again as maybe The Talisman and Black House since they are Stephen King but not Stephen King.
Hi! Is there a way to get this book (Rage) in english? I have a very old edition in spanish and would like to read it in the original language. Let me know, thanks!
Oh man, on Ebay but only if you have a lot of money OR frequent your local used book stores and estate auctions.
Your best bet is to look for a copy of the “Bachman Books,” which will contain “Rage,” “The Long Walk,” “Roadwork,” and one other story whose title I can’t think of right now.
Everything’s Eventual and Nightmares & Dreamscapes ?
OK. another guess Grant Publisher’s “The Little Sisters of Eluria” and “The Wind Through The keyhole”
Hi Guys,
I’ve come across a bit of a mystery that I’m hoping you can help with.
While rereading Rage, I came across a phrase SK uses that I noticed I had read before in Joyland & Revival.
Up where “the air is rare”
Thinking it was a wee bit strange to use such an odd phrase in 3 different books…
I looked farther and found it also to be in:
The Shining
The Running Man
BlackHouse
Faithful
&
GhostBrothers of Darkland County
That’s 8 books (altho BlackHouse and RunningMan say “Air was rare” and Joyland says both is/was.
Has anyone else noticed this?
Is it in ALL his books?
Does he use other phrases so frequently?
Considering the span of time between books….. very interesting indeed!
Whatcha think?
I’ve noticed some other favorite phrases “bitch and a buzz saw”(Dreamcatcher), “bowels went loose: or” became loose”(11/22/63 and others), “smell or taste of copper, metal, ozone” (too many too mention) and “worrying a loose of missing tooth with his /her tongue”. It is one of the reasons I love King’s work voice. It has a strong personality, that rewards you and lets you get to know some of his personal verbal penchants.
Cycle of the Werewolf and Thinner
If no one is right yet, how about Cycyle of the Werewolf and Revival
I think it is The Talisman and Black House
Thinner and Wind Through the Keyhole
The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer and The Plant
The book The Diary of Ellen Rinbauer wasn’t written by Stephen King.
TOMMYKNOCKERS and BLACK HOUSE?
Seeing as how he said “I’ve never read”, seems to indicate the past. So I’m thinking they are older books. The Plant, really wouldn’t be a surprise since to the best of my knowledge it has never seen print, and it isn’t finished is it? I did notice that My Pretty Pony was left off of the list provided so… I am going to assume that anything put out by CD he’s read. Dunno, it’s a stumper.
Four Past Midnight and Misery.
What about “Christine” and “Thinner”?
I would like to guess Song of Susannah and The Dark Tower, and I’m going with them because I can’t imagine someone skipping over two of the others to read the end. This would also allow for reading Wind Through the Keyhole since it doesn’t ruin anything and falls between 4 and 5.
My two guesses are “Everything’s Eventual” and “Full Dark, No Stars,” which led up to the movie, “Big Driver.”
Insomnia and The Dead Zone.
I’m gonna go with Thinner and Firestarter.
guess I’ll try again Roadwork and The Colorado Kid
Guessing Tommyknockers & The Dark Half
My first guess was Danse Macabre (as it is one of the two I haven’t read); but given your role in the industry (publisher, author etc) and the fact that it was released in the early 1980s before your career took off, I bet you read it with some interest. How about Cell and Dreamcatcher? Both came out in years when King released other novels within months and in years when you were very busy with Cemetary Dance anthologies.
I will try again; Revival and Carrie
The Eyes of the Dragon
&
The Tommyknockers
still nobody has guessed the two books? ok i shall try again, DANSE MACABRE and EYES OF THE DRAGON
One last guess
The Tommyknockers
&
Delores Claiborne
Since my original guess was wrong, I’m going to go for round two with Blaze and Under the Dome
If my calculations are correct, there are 5,402 possible combinations. Just an interesting side-note.
Hmmm… The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon and Storm of the Century?
Okay, lemme try again…
The Stand (original)
&
The Eyes of the Dragon
or maybe
The Stand (original)
&
Tommyknockers
